§ 4-24. Procedure when dog bites person.

Latest version.
  • It shall be the duty of the health officer or his duly authorized representative, when a complaint is received that a dog has bitten a person, to take the dog into custody and notify the owner of the dog, if known, and ascertain if the owner wants the dog examined by a licensed veterinarian of his own choosing and at the owner's expense. If the owner does not want such examination made by a veterinarian of his choosing, such an examination shall be made by the health officer at the owner's expense. If it is found, after such examination, that the dog has no symptoms of rabies, the dog may be released to the owner upon his signing an agreement to have the dog re-examined in seven (7) days. If at such time the dog is found to have rabies, such dog shall be returned to the health officer and disposed of in the manner prescribed by the health officer and approved by city council. It is expressly provided that all such cases are to be checked and recorded by the health officer.
